Mount Meru trek takes you through places from where you can get a glimpse of the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro.

6 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Via Machame Route

Nicknamed the “Whiskey” route because the route is popularized as somewhat difficult and more expensive than Marangu route. On an overall comparison of the routes to scale Kilimanjaro, this is one of the best routes to take, both in terms of acclimatization and cost. The Machame route is considered a difficult route, and is better suited for more adventurous trekkers and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. The Machame route is scenically beautiful and varied. However, due to its popularity there are increased numbers of trekkers, it loses some of its splendour. The Machame route approaches the summit from the southwest and descends using the Mweka route, rewarding climbers with views of the expansive Shira Plateau, an optional scramble up Lava Tower, a climb up the Great Barranco wall, and a traverse underneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field. In certain sections this route is steeper than the Marangu and Rongai routes and physically more demanding but is easier overall. Great for acclimatization with lots of walk high, sleep low opportunities. Challenging trek with stunning scenery through 5 diverse climatic zones. Good opportunity to split pre-summit day climb to leave climbers rested before summiting very popular trail.

3 Days Mount Ol Donyo Lengai and lake Natron

Climbing to the summit [2890 mt / 9481 ft] of the active volcano, which is locally regarded as the sacred Mountain of God in the Maa Language, is possible without specific equipment but the ascent is challenging because the mountain is very steep. The best time to climb the mountain is early in the morning before the sun is getting to hot. The upper part of the volcano is the hardest to climb. The slope is about 45 to 55 degrees. The surface is covered by a thin slippery layer of lava under which the ash is still loose. You will proceed almost crawling, going up and sliding down continuously. The summit tent to be hazy and cloudy except for a few hours early in the morning when you should be able to see the sun rising over Mount Kilimanjaro. There is a cold wind and temperature is about 10 degrees. To descent it will take you approximately 5 hours.

Until 2007 eruption there were two craters, the active northern one about 200 meters deep and the sleeping southern one. After the eruption they melted together.

Mt. Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only known volcano in the world that sometimes erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a highly fluid lava that contains almost no silicon. Natrocarbonatite lava (most fluid lava) is also much cooler than other lavas. During the day most of this lava flows look like fluid black oil. Some feel the lava flows resemble mud like?flows. Natrocarbonatite lava turns white when in contact with moisture. During rainy periods, the lava turns white almost immediately whilst this whitening takes longer during the dry periods.

Herds of zebra and wildebeest can sometimes be seen on the trip. A trip to the mountain can also cover other nearby areas of interest like Lake Natron, which is a breeding ground for all East African flamingos and other birds. There are several Maasai bomas (villages) which can be visited on additional cost, just talk to your driver guide. If you are interested, you can visit the nearby Mount Gelai with geysers and a brilliant waterfall.

6 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Via Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is one of the easiest routes and the success rate is very high. The route starts on the north side of the mountain just south of the Kenyan border, and is one of the least traveled routes. The descent is down the Marangu Route on the south side of the mountain, so climbers see the mountain from many view points. The drive to the trail head takes about 3 hours from Moshi through many villages and coffee plantations, including a stop to register climbing permits at Marangu. The Rongai Route can also be accessed from Amboseli National Park in Kenya. Allow 2 hours including border crossing. We will need copies of passports ahead of time.

8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Via Northern Circuit

The Northern Circuit is the newest route up Kilimanjaro and also the longest. Because of its length, the Northern Circuit has the highest summit success rate. The route follows the same as the Lemosho Route for the first two days and then veers off to circle around the quieter northern slopes to the east side of the mountain. Northern Circuit approaches the summit via Gilman’s Point before descending on the same route as the Machame and Lemosho.
